Arrest in Murder of Trans Woman; Lucy the Elephant Rejects PETA Donation; Man Shoots Horse and Buggy

Philadelphia Police have made an arrest today in the robbery and murder of a transgender woman last week in the Hunting Park neighborhood of North Philadelphia. 24-year-old Pedro Redding of Hunting Park has been charged with murder, robbery, and related offenses. Police say that 22-year-old Keisha Jenkins was targeted because she was a prostitute and carried plenty of cash. It happened early in the morning last Tuesday near 13th and Wingohocking Streets. Redding is cooperating with authorities who are now looking for his three accomplices. Jenkins was jumped after getting dropped off in the area. After getting beat to the ground, one of the men shot her twice in the back. Redding was not the shooter, but says Jenkins was shot because she fought back. Redding had been charged years ago for robbing a transgender person, but the charges were dropped. There is a $20,000 reward for information that leads to arrests and convictions in this case.

The board of trustees for Lucy the Elephant in Margate, NJ has passed on the offer of a donation from PETA to it's restoration fund. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wanted to take the opportunity and use the 6-story landmark as a way to bring attention to the treatment of elephants in circuses. They wanted to put a shackle around one of Lucy's legs and a teardrop under an eye. Richard Helfant, CEO of Lucyâ€™s board of trustees, said that a visit to Lucy is supposed to be a happy experience for all, and anything that would change that is not acceptable. PETA was offering $2,000 out of the $58,000 goal. Lucy needs some wood replaced and fresh coats of paint.

Pennsylvania State Police have charged an 18-year-old man after he allegedly shot a horse pulling a buggy with a BB gun, endangering the passengers, a couple and their 1-year-old child. Caleb Gotjen, of Garrett, PA, shot the animal as he drove by the horse and buggy in Summit Township, Somerset County, on October 4th. The horse was not injured but was startled, putting Marie and Marvin Yoder and their child in danger. He was charged with reckless endangerment, harassment and disorderly conduct.
