2 Arrested in Lower Moreland Murder; Punkin Chunkin Canceled Again; Gender-Neutral Bathroom Bill OKd

Two Philadelphia men have been arrested for the murder of a Lower Moreland man during a home invasion at the end of September. Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman announced today that 20-year-olds Naadir Abdul-Ali and Desmond Smith were arrested last week in the shooting death of 53-year-old Kevin Brown. Brown was the father of Abdul-Ali's 18-year-old former girlfriend. According to the DA, she broke up with him as he became "possessive, obsessive, violent, and his conduct was completely controlling." He sent her threatening texts asking to have a second chance. On September 27th around 11:00 p.m. in the 2300 block of Philmont Avenue, the two men broke into the Brown family home. Mr. Brown was shot in the neck and died at the hospital. Police used the texts to track the two down.

The annual World Championship Punkin Chunkin event held in Delaware has been canceled for the second year in a row. This year's event was going to be held at Dover International Speedway but organizers had problems securing the proper insurance. Last year, the event was called off because the owner of the Sussex County farm it had always been staged pulled out. He was sued by a volunteer who was injured in an ATV accident on the grounds in 2011. The Punkin Chunkin contest pits teams against each other in various categories all trying to throw, launch, or fire a pumpkin as far as possible. It was first held in 1986 and has grown extremely popular over the years getting national exposure on the Discovery Channel. Contestants use various methods including trebuchets, catapults, torsion, air cannons, centrifugals, and human powered. The record distance is a whopping 4694.68 ft or .89 miles. Ticket holders will receive refunds.

Philadelphia City Council has unanimously approved a bill that will change all single occupancy public bathrooms in municipal buildings to gender-neutral. Single bathrooms will no longer be designated as solely â€œMenâ€ or â€œWomanâ€ but accessible to all. This does not apply to multi-stall bathrooms. The bill was drafted by Mayor Nutter's Office of LGBT Affairs and introduced by Councilman Mark Squilla. Philadelphia becomes one of the first cities in the country with legislation aimed at more inclusive bathroom access. Mayor Nutter is expected to sign the bill.
