NJ Nurse Reused Syringes on Dozens; Murder of Transgender F a Robbery; SS United States Scrap?

Over 60 people at a Mercer County, New Jersey company received a medical alert after it was a learned that a nurse had reused the same syringe when administering flu shots to employees. 67 employees were given the shots at the Otsuka Pharmaceutical offices on the 500 block of Carnegie Center in West Windsor, NJ. The nurse changed needles between patients but did not change the syringe which is still "failing to follow proper medical procedures and safeguards." The New Jersey Department of Health and the CDC are recommending those affected get tested for Hepatitis B and C, and HIV. Free tests will be given. The nurse also did not give a full dose of the flu vaccine and the patients are advised to get another one. The New Jersey Board of Nursing is investigating.

Philadelphia Police believe that the assault and murder of a 22-year-old transgender woman was motived by robbery and was probably not a hate crime. Keisha Jenkins was jumped by 5-6 males after being dropped off at 13th and Wingohocking at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. After being beaten, she was shot twice in the back as the men fled. Homicide Capt. James Clark says that after talking with some tipsters he believes Jenkins was targeted for her money. That area of Hunting Park is known for transgender prostitutes and Jenkins either may have had or they thought she had a lot of cash. There is a $20,000 reward for information that leads an arrest and conviction in this case. If you have any information call 215-686-3334.

The conservancy in charge of the S.S. United States says that unless it gets a buyer or some infusion of cash it will be forced to sell the once top ocean liner to the scrap yard by the end of the month. The ship sits rusting on Pier 82 in South Philadelphia, it's funnels rising high above Columbus Boulevard. The ship itself still holds the records for transatlantic passenger travel. The conservancy says that it takes $60,000/month to maintain and house the ship. Plans for redevelopment or relocation have been floated but nothing concrete has quite surfaced. There is a fundraiser planned for October 29th at the Union League.
