Violence Threat at Philly College; Irving Fryar Sentenced; Former NAACP Leader Jerry Mondesire Dies

Authorities at Philadelphia-area universities and colleges are closely monitoring what officials are calling a "threat of violence" that was made online. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosive (ATF) informed officials at schools that the threat was made online against "a university near Philadelphia." The posting states that an action could take place at 2 p.m. eastern time on Monday, October 5. Colleges are encouraging the community to be very aware of the surroundings and to report any concerns or suspicious activity to Campus Safety Services. Former Philadelphia Eagle Irving Fryar was sentenced Friday to five years in prison for his role in a mortgage scam. His mother, Allene McGhee, was sentenced to three years' probation in the same case. Both were convicted in August of applying for multiple mortgage loans in quick succession while using the same property as collateral. 53 year old Fryar claimed he was the victim of a "con artist" William Barkdale, who told him to carry out the scheme. Barkdale pleaded guilty last year to a conspiracy charge and was the government's key witness at Fryar's trial. He is serving a 20-month prison sentence.

Former Philadelphia NAACP leader J. Whyatt "Jerry" Mondesire, a charismatic activist and a fixture in the city's political circles, died Sunday night at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The Inquirer reports that Mondesire was having dialysis at Chestnut Hill Hospital on Friday when he suffered a brain aneurysm and was then transferred to Jefferson. Mondesire, a former reporter and editor with The Inquirer and publisher of the Philadelphia Sun, was named chief of the Philadelphia branch of the NAACP in 1991. In 2014, Mondesire was suspended by the national office over a feud stemming from allegations of misuse of chapter funds. Jerry Mondesire was 65.
