The architect who oversaw the doomed demolition of a building that collapsed onto a Salvation Army thrift store two years ago testified Thursday against the contractor accused of causing the deadly accident. Plato Marinakos testified that he arranged the hiring of North Philadelphia demolition specialist Griffin Campbell based in part on the contractors low bid of $112,000. He told the jury that the contract worked out between Campbell and the building’s owners specified that the contractor would be responsible for the safety of workers and equipment on and adjacent to the site.

New Jersey shore towns are dealing with flooding and heavy rain courtesy of Joaquin.
From Atlantic City to Sea Isle City, the Jersey shore is once again bracing for days of bad weather and maybe more. Towns are in full on preparation mode. The Mayor of Sea Isle says their Public Works Department has been at it all day. In Ocean City and Margate they are already starting to see some minor flooding and its only expected to get worse with rising tides and rain. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has already declared a State of Emergency.

A policeman charged with shooting his friend to death while they watched an action movie at his house was found guilty of murder on Thursday.
Deptford police officer James Stuart was convicted of murder and aggravated manslaughter. Stuart, 31, shot his friend David Compton, 27, in the face at Stuart’s Deptford home while he was off-duty. Stuart said he unloaded his Glock 27 and let Compton dry-fire it at the “bad guys” on the screen in the film. Later, Stuart fell asleep, then he awoke and picked up the gun from a sofa to dry-fire it at the TV but turned as Compton spoke, heard a loud boom and saw a small hole in Compton’s cheek. Compton died six days after the January 2013 shooting from brain damage due to oxygen deprivation, prosecutors said.
Stuart’s blood-alcohol content tested at 0.14 percent, above the state’s limit of 0.08 for alcohol-related offenses. Prosecutors said Stuart acted recklessly. Stuart said he didn’t know the gun was loaded and he would never have hurt Compton. Mutual friends testified Stuart and Compton were close friends.
