Papal Economic Impact, SEPTA Papal Plan Results, Papal Stage Remnants

Mayor Nutter says it will be months before the city knows the economic impact of the Pope's visit. Many local businesses believe shutting down the city cost them more than visitor spending could make up for. Local restaurateurs took the mayor to task for scaring residents away with overly-extensive road closures and one suggested that, perhaps because of the religious nature of the event, the estimated 850-thousand visitors did not do much for the local economy .

SEPTA says its Papal plan was ready for thousands to use the regional rails, but the volume showed up somewhere else. SEPTAâ€™s Andrew Busch says the original plan was designed to handle 300-thousand rail passengers, but a little less than 63-thousand actually used that route. He says the Broad Street Line was the hottest ticket in town with approximately 55-thousand people riding from the stadium complex to the Walnut-Locust station. Busch says the other piece was having regional trains ready to go after the big events, like the Sunday afternoon mass, where within about 2-and a half hours after the event ended, SEPTA had the crowds cleared.

Now that the massive stage on which Pope Francis celebrated Mass is coming down on the Ben Franklin Parkway, organizers are making sure all of the ingredients will be remembered for generations. They are in the safekeeping of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. When the Mass wrapped up, a liturgical staff accounted for all items large and small, from the crucifix and the Popeâ€™s chair, to books and other objects that were prominent in the temporary altar. A large amount of plywood used in the construction of the altar, scenic elements and theatrical pieces will be broken down and donated to Project HOME, the homeless advocacy group, which will re-purpose the materialâ€¦..about a thousand sheets. Also, Flemington Department Store, which put down 1,200 square yards of white and gold carpet, around the sitting area for the Pope, is cutting it into 4 and 5-inch squares. Co-owner Ted Resnick says the company is making them available to folks at no charge, or a suggested donation of any amount. It works out to about 20,000 pieces of carpet.
