Red Cross volunteers from all across the country will start arriving in Philadelphia today and many will be staying across the street from the Red Cross' Center City location at a school through the weekend. The Red Cross has a plan for whatever develops over the next couple days and if you’re coming to Center City, they want you to have a plan too, so you and your family can stay safe and just as important — stay together while navigating the crowds. About 600 volunteers will check in today at the 23rd and Chestnut Street location and are prepared to stay through the papal visit. Some are driving from as far away as Detroit to take part. “We have volunteers that said “I will get in the car and drive myself there because this is important for the Red Cross to be responding.†says Red Cross Director of Communications, Anthony Tornetta.
The Red Cross will have two main roles this weekend: medical assistance and family reunification. The toll-free help line number is 1-855-259-2114. The 12 Red Cross family reunification centers are located at:

On Wednesday evening officials with the World Meeting of Families hosted a forum where mayors from all over the country including Baltimore, New Orleans, and Columbia South Carolina joined Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter at La Salle University as they discussed education, policing and medical issues facing their respective cities. During the 90 minute long discussion, they also talked about how local government can strengthen and sustain the family through policy, law making and advocacy.
The mayors also took questions from the audience and online viewers via Twitter.
Now that Philadelphia has signed a contract with the World Meeting of Families, guaranteeing reimbursement for 12-million dollars in expenses related to the Pope’s visit, suburban leaders are wondering whether they can get reimbursement too. Towns that border the city are spending hundreds of thousands on their own security. When SEPTA alerted Upper Darby that its papal visit transit plan was going to put huge pressure on the 69th Street area, Mayor Tom Micozzie didn’t stop to think about costs. That plan turned out to include road closures and extra manpower that he estimates could total some 200-thousand dollars. Micozzie was surprised to hear the World Meeting is covering Philadelphia’s costs– an offer not made to suburban communities. He’s written to the group, asking about reimbursement but hasn’t heard back and spokesmen did not respond to a request for comment. Lower Merion will also be spending more than a hundred-thousand for the event .
Lower Merion spokesman Tom Walsh says the township expects to spend more than 100-thousand dollars on security around St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. Some reimbursement may come from the state and federal government.
