All 10,000 free tickets made available to the general public this afternoon for the Festival of Families at 4pm were claimed within 2 minutes according to World Meeting of Families officials. There will be another ticket giveaway at 8pm for tickets to the Papal Mass on Sunday 9/27. That giveaway is expected to be equally brisk. You can go to http://www.worldmeeting2015.org/tickets for details of how to claim yours. These tickets are in addition to ones distributed to the area's 219 parishes, neighboring dioceses, social service programs and other faith communities. Remember, you do not need a ticket to attend any of the events during the Papal Weekend. The tickets only reserve the holder a spot in one of the closer secured areas nearer to the stage/altar on the Parkway and at Independence Mall. Scalpers have already put tickets up on websites for up to $1000. Beware of scams. These tickets were free and carry no face value. A ticket for sale on a website could possibly be fake.

UPDATE: All 20,000 free tickets made available to the general public today for the Festival of Families and to the Papal Mass were claimed today. World Meeting of Families officials say that "reservations" for the 10,000 Papal Mass tickets were placed in 30 seconds. In my experience, not all of those initial reservations led to completed orders and tickets were re-released to the pool after a few minutes. Still, they were all taken fast. The Festival of Families tickets went up at 4pm and the Papal Mass tickets went up at 8 pm.

Delaware County officials have announced their security plans ahead of the Papal visit. They say they are now expecting 40% fewer riders to make their way through SEPTA's busy 69th Street Station in Upper Darby than originally planned. That won't change anything and they will continue to plan on initial expectations. The county has requested 280 Pennsylvania National Guard Troops. Most will be stationed at 69th Street for security and crowd control. Delco leaders also emphasized that you plan ahead. Make sure that you know where and when you picked up and make contingency plans. Individual municipalities will be closing roads and changing traffic patterns around SEPTA stations. You can find all of Delaware County's World Meeting of Families and Papal Visit information including maps of road closures at http://www.co.delaware.pa.us/papalvisit15/index.html

A Philadelphia woman at the center of the Tacony “Basement of Horrors”> case has pled guilty to all charges. 55-year-old Linda Weston will be spared the death sentence but will spend the rest of her life in prison plus 80 years. Weston is accused of being the ringleader in the racketeering scheme that lasted from 2001-2011. Weston and her cohorts preyed on the mentally handicapped and would lure a them into their homes. They would then lock them away, starve them, sometimes force them into prostitution, all while collecting their social security benefits. They were discovered when four victims were found in a basement in the Tacony section in deplorable conditions. She was charged with 196 counts including murder, kidnapping, forced human labor, sex trafficking, wire and mail fraud and hate crimes. This was the first time hate crimes were pursued for crimes against the mentally disabled.

Tonight,
Partly Cloudy, chance of thunderstorm late, temperatures in the mid 80's this evening in Center City.
