Papal Event Ticket Info, Kitzler Transgender Court Battle, Philadelphia School Test Scores Down

On Wednesday, the Secret Service released a Pedestrian Walking Map for the weekend of the Papal Visit. The map indicated areas where event attendees could walk and where those attending events needed to walk through security points. The map also indicated areas where tickets were required for access. Tickets will be needed for several events during the Papal Visit including the event at Independence Hall on Saturday and the mass on the Ben Franklin Parkway on Sunday. Tickets are being made available to the 219 parishes throughout the five-county Archdiocese as well as to Archdiocesan social service ministries. 5,000 tickets will be made available to the public on a first come, first serve basis on Tuesday, September 8. Tickets will be available online and more information will be made public on Friday, September 4 with instructions on how to access these 5,000 tickets. There is no cost associated with these tickets. Saturdayâ€™s Festival of Families is open to the public, however certain parts of the Parkway will require tickets. Tickets granting access to the area from 20th Street to Eakins Oval are being distributed by the World Meeting of Families to the Archdiocese of Philadelphiaâ€™s 219 parishes. There are no tickets required for access to the Parkway from 20th Street to City Hall. Sundayâ€™s Papal Mass will operate in the same way as certain parts of the Parkway will require a ticket. Those tickets are being allocated directly by the World Meeting of Families to the 219 parishes.

A 48-year-old transgender woman took on her parents Wednesday in a Bucks County courtroom. Sheâ€™s fighting for her right to have gender-reassignment surgery. Her parents want her declared incompetent. Christine Kitzler says sheâ€™s identified as female since her teen years and even dressed as a woman in college, calling herself â€œChrissyâ€ on her college diploma.
Christineâ€™s parents filed court papers â€” alleging Christine â€” born a boy and named Christopher â€” suffers from mild retardation, suicidal thoughts and serious medical conditions that make surgery too risky. They argued Christine is not mentally stable able so they should be named her guardian. The judge sided with Christine Kitzler. She says she knows the surgery is risky, but sheâ€™s ready.

Results released Wednesday show state test scores are way down in Philadelphia schools. But the drop was expected. Philadelphia school district studentsâ€™ scores dropped sharply over last year. English proficiency dropped from 42 to 32 percent, and math proficiency plummeted from 45 to 17 percent. But scores were down statewide, because of a tougher new exam that included more writing and problem-solving skills, says Philadelphia school district spokesman Fernando Gallard.
