Papal Hospital Plans, PA Budget Stalemate, #OpenInPHL Kits

Philadelphia area hospitals are firming up their game plans for the papal weekend, especially in terms of how to take care of staff that can't go home. Hahnemann University Hospital has 750 people who will not be going home the weekend of the papal visit and contingency plans are in the works to make sure they have places to sleep and things to do in their off hours. Hahnemann's Tom Runkle says recreation is being taken very seriously. "During their down time, we have pool tables, ping-pong tables, interactive video games , movies, big screen TV for watching the Eagles game on Sunday." Runkle says the hospital has never gone to this extent to provide entertainment to staff before, because there isn’t enough lead time before a snow storm or a hurricane.

As the state budget impasse enters its third month, “Pre-K Counts” and “Head Start” supplemental grants are among the funds being held hostage in the budget stalemate. Erinn Finn with ‘Today’s Child’ in Delaware County says without state funding to pay for supplies and 14 teachers’ salaries and benefits:
“We did have to take out a loan this past month.” She says that $130,000 loan will only get them to October, but she says they’re lucky to get a loan at all. Finn says providers will eventually get the money, but children can’t get do-overs on crucial Pre-K lessons.

Pope Francis will be arriving in Philadelphia in less than a month. City officials are focused on energizing and exciting those who work and live in the city. On Monday, the World Meeting of Families and the City of Philadelphia kicked-off the distribution of #OpenInPHL kits to local businesses as a part of its recently announced “I’ll Be There” awareness campaign. Mayor Michael Nutter and others delivered the kits to businesses that will be open that weekend. One of their stops was a Wawa store on 17th Street. The kit contains signs, buttons, and other items. Officials say they are designed to help businesses plan for the event and to provide information they can use to encourage residents and customers to fully experience the papal visit.
