PENNDOT Papal Plans, 2015 Fringe Festival, PA Budget Stalemate

PennDOT is preparing for the Pope's Arrival by scaling back on its ongoing road projects on major highways in the region. PennDOT's Gene Blaum says "There will be no construction related lane closures on Interstate 95 or on any other regional expressway in the Philadelphia area during the entire week of the World Meeting of Families and through the weekend of the papal visit." That means from Sept. 22 through 27th, work that had been clogging up lanes on major roadways — especially at night — is suspended. Blaum says crews also are halting their work on removing bridges over the Vine Street Expressway.
However, they expect to finish work shortly on the Spring Garden Street project near the art museum. Blaum says the goal is to keep key traffic routes feeding the city from the suburban counties clear so visitors coming to town for the pope’s visit or the World Meeting congress can come into town unimpeded.

This week begins the 2015 Fringe Festival in Philadelphia, which lasts about 17 days, and is made of many performances. "It’s an amazing festival of work of all sorts of artistic disciplines, all performative arts– throughout the entire city, so anywhere you go, your likely to find something unique, off-beat, something you typically won’t get to see through the rest of the year" said Dan Hodge, who is Co-Founding Artistic Director with Philadelphia Artists’ Collective. Hodge encourages everyone to see a show during the festival.

Today marks the end of Pennsylvania’s second full month without a budget , and no end to the stalemate in sight. On Tuesday, state House majority Republicans – for lack of Democratic votes – tried and failed on a piecemeal basis to partially override Governor Wolf’s June 30th veto of the budget. Then on Wednesday, the Governor cancelled a schedule negotiating session with legislative leaders. His spokesman said Wolf needed more time to review a GOP proposal. House majority leader Dave Reed raised the possibility that lawmakers could attempt to pass temporary, stop-gap funding measures. But stopgap measures would require the governor’s approval. Reed described the budget situation as being in ‘limbo’.
