Sixers legend Darryl Dawkins Passes; 200k Papal Passes Still Available; ChesterCo Shooting Justified

Former Philadelphia 76ers great Darryl Dawkins, known for his monstrous dunks, has passed away this morning. Dawkins earned the nickname "Chocolate Thunder" from Stevie Wonder for his powerful, rim rocking, and back board smashing slams. He shattered two backboards a few weeks apart in 1979 leading to news rule and the advent of the breakaway rim. Dawkins had a proclivity for nicknames and called his first shattering slam "The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam." Dawkins was one of the first players drafted out of high school to play in the NBA. He was picked 5th by the Sixers in 1975. In 1979-80 he helped lead Philly to the NBA Final against the Lakers. Dawkins was living in the Lehigh Valley, recently coaching Lehigh Carbon Community College. He died at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest at 11:19 a.m. The Lehigh County Coronor's office will perform an autopsy on Friday to determine a cause of death. He was 58.

SEPTA officials say that after all the lottery sales and in-person availability of Special Papal Passes for Regional Rail trains on the weekend of September 26-27th, they still have 200,000 passes for sale. They had made 350,000 tickets available (175,000 each day), but so far only 110,000 have been sold (50,000 for Saturday and 60,000 for Sunday.) Tickets are $10 each day. They want to get the word out that despite any doom and gloom about being able to attend this once in a lifetime event, SEPTA is prepared to get people there. "We want people to know this is a historic event," General Manager Joseph Casey said. "It's easy to get here. It's not going to be the long walks that previously have been reported." The transit authority has even secured 23,000 parking spots at the outlying stations for people planning on taking Regional Rail. SEPTA also announced their bus/transit schedules. Most will operate on a weekday schedule and drop riders a few blocks from the traffic box. Distances to walk to Logan Square from the Center City train stations are all around a mile and a little more for the buses. The Chester County District Attorney's office has determined that the officer-involved shooting of a man inside the Justice Center was justified. 34-year-old Curtis Smith entered the lobby of the Justice Center shortly before noon on Tuesday armed with a knife and immediately began to slash at Deputy Sheriff Kevin Brough. Brough's protective vest prevented serious injury from the stabbings. A second deputy opened fire, hitting Smith twice in the torso. He later died at the hospital. Brough was also hit in the hand by gunfire and has had surgery. Smith was arrested this past March after jumping the White House fence. A family member believes he was attempting 'suicide-by-cop'. Smith had been dealing with mental health and family issues. His brother had murdered his father and his wife had filed a Protection from Abuse Order.
