Red Bank Battle Cannon Uncovered; Decomposing Bodies at Funeral Home; La Salle Layoffs

Archaeologists doing a dig at the site of the Battle of Red Bank in Gloucester County may have uncovered a cannon that exploded in 1777 during a battle defending Fort Mercer against the British. That explosion killed 12 American regiments during the fight on October 22nd 238 years ago. Until the find is tested and verified, the heavy artillery will remain in the ground.

Philadelphia police and city health officials are investigating the discovery of three decomposing bodies in a building owned by a nearby funeral home. Officers were called to the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood in North Philadelphia after neighbors reported a foul odor. Officers found two bodies stored in boxes and a third body in a casket. The building was apparently owned by the Powell Funeral Home around the corner. Police say the funeral home "was aware of the bodies that were there."

Faced with a more-than-$12-million shortfall - the largest in recent school history - and a precipitous drop in the freshman class, La Salle recently laid off 23 employees, about 3 percent of the workforce. And more changes, though not layoffs, are coming, said president Colleen Hanycz, who is less than two months into her tenure. The Dalai Lama will visit the LaSalle’s campus in October.
