China's Affect on Global Markets; Eakins Oval Pop-Up Park Closes; WCU Legionnaires' Disease

China's stock market fell Monday by its biggest margin in eight years, defying the government's multi-billion-dollar effort to stop a slide that has wiped out the gains of this year's price boom. The decline threatened to weigh heavily on global markets after last week's Chinese losses triggered a worldwide selloff. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 8.5 percent, its biggest one-day loss since 2007. Here in the U.S., financial markets are in a sell-off.

The Eakins Oval pop-up park and beer garden wrapped up its third and possibly final year yesterday. The pop-up was created as a three-year project in 2013 by a partnership of the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy. Its success - about 70,000 people came to the park this summer - has sparked conversations about the spot's use year-round. With the shutdown of the pop-up, the oval will return to being a green space with a large fountain, and a venue for such events as the Made in America concert and Pope Francis' visit next month.

Legionnaires' disease bacteria have been discovered in hot water systems at West Chester University, but officials say the levels detected are not cause for immediate concern. Hot water systems were drained and treated with chlorine in nine buildings where the legionella bacteria was discovered. After a West Chester employee tested positive for Legionnaires' disease in July, officials discovered higher-than-acceptable levels of the bacteria in cooling towers at eight campus buildings. Classes start today.
