Julian Bond Passes at 75, Schuylkill River Drowning, Straight Outta Compton Tops Weekend Box Office

Civil rights icon Julian Bond grew up in the greater Philadelphia area â€” and went on to break barriers in his fight for equality. The longtime board chairman of the NAACP died Saturday in Florida after a brief illness.
Julian Bond grew up in Oxford, Pennsylvania. Julian Bond was an activist and politician. As a college student at Morehouse, Bond helped to start the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s where he served as their public relations representative. Then in 1968, he became the first African-American to win the Democratic nomination for national Vice President. He also served two decades in the Georgia legislature. Bond was a journalist and academic. He taught at Penn, Drexel, Harvard and other universities. He was also one of the founders of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Julian Bond was 75 years old.

Officials are warning of the dangers of swimming in Philadelphia creeks and rivers after a man drowned in the Schuylkill over the weekend in Manayunk. If youâ€™re looking for a way to cool off in this summer heat, swimming in the Schuylkill River or other bodies of water in the area should not be an option, says Lt. Andrew Napoli with the Philadelphia Police Marine Unit. Strong currents continue to be one of the major concerns. He also warns of unseen dangers under the water whether itâ€™s the normal rocky bottoms of the rivers and creeks, or just other things â€” debris and stuff â€” that have been thrown in throughout the years.

Straight Outta Comptonshot straight to number one at the box office. Director F. Gary Grayâ€™s â€œgangsta rapâ€ biodrama earned an estimated $56-million on its debut weekend, giving it a runaway first-place finish. The runner-up was the holdover hit sequel and the leader the last two weekends, Mission: Impossible â€“ Rogue Nation, which took in another $17-million. Third was the weekendâ€™s other new attraction, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the adaptation of the sixties TV series from director Guy Ritchie. It took in just under $14-million on its first weekend. And rounding out the top five were holdovers Fantastic Four with $8-million and The Gift with $7-million.
