SEPTA Lottery for Trolley Transit Pass; No Screening on Ben Franklin; Pope To Use Gettysburg Lectern

SEPTA has announced another lottery for transit passes for the weekend of the Papal Visit in September. This lottery will be for Special 3 Day passes on the Norristown High Speed Line and Routes 101 and 102 trolley lines. The $10 pass will be good for Saturday â€“ Monday September 26-28th. You will choose one of 6 outlying stations. For the 101 trolley you would either pick Springfield Mall or Leamy avenue, for the 102 trolley, North Street or Clinfton-Aldan and for the Norristown High Speed Line, Gulph Mills or Villanova station. The passes are good for connecting service to the Market-Frankford El at 69th Street on the weekend and buses on Monday. Riders will have to choose a departure time, either 6 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. until 1p.m. The lottery runs from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. on Wednesday August 12th. There are only 20,000 passes for the High Speed Line and 5,600 passes for each trolley line. You can request up to 10 passes. Winners will be notified next Friday. The passes are not good on Regional Rail.

The Secret Service has dismissed any notion that walkers across the Ben Franklin Bridge during the Papal Visit in September will have to go through airport-like security. It was reported early on Friday that the expected 100,000 daily pedestrians crossing the bridge would have to go through screening before making the crossing. Anonymous sources told news organizations that the plan was likely. However, Secret Service spokesmen reached out and said this will not be the case. They did say that law enforcement personnel will be stationed on the bridge to ensure everyone crosses safely. The Ben Franklin Bridge will be closed to traffic from Friday night to Monday at noon.

When Pope Francis stands in front of Independence Hall on Saturday afternoon September 26th to deliver a speech on immigration and religious freedom he will stand at a simple, walnut lectern. The significance is much greater than it's appearance. That same lectern is the very one to hold President Abraham Lincoln's speech on the battlefield as he delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19th, 1863. The piece is on display at the Union League as part of a private collection and will be loaned to the World Meeting of Families. 30-40,000 people will be able to attend the free, but ticketed event on Independence Mall that afternoon. It will be simulcast on Jumbotrons around the city and on the Parkway.
