Nutter Refutes Leaked Papal Security Maps; Juniata Park Hit-And-Run; SEPTA Cancels Papal Press Conf

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter called a press conference today to refute several security maps that have been circulating on the internet supposedly showing vehicle free and fenced zones during the Papal visit in September. He said, â€œNo official security perimeter has been announced, or fully and finally determined...Speculative reporting on this matter performs no legitimate function except to paint a false and/or misleading picture for the public.â€ Nutter did say that some new information will be available next week, but that the issue of perimeters, anticipated street closures, whatâ€™s going to be open, whatâ€™s going to be closed, won't be available until a few weeks before the event. City and federal officials are still working on the plan with the Secret Service having final say.

Philadelphia police have identified the owner of the striking vehicle involved in the deadly hit-and-run accident Sunday night in Juniata Park. 38-year-old Alberto Vangas of North 9th Street is the registered owner of the 2008 gray Mitsubishi SUV police found following the crash. Police are looking to talk to Vangas. The incident happened at 10:40 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of East Luzerne and I streets. 41-year-old Osvaldo Arroyo was pulling out of a parking space with his brother 42-year-old Francis Arroyo in the passenger seat when they were hit. Francis died at an area hospital, Osvaldo suffered minor injuries. The fleeing car was found on Rising Sun Avenue near 9th Street. It is possible that if Vangas stayed at the scene there would have been no charges.

SEPTA canceled an afternoon press conference today to give an update on the sale of Regional Rail passes for the Papal visit. â€œSEPTA Press conference previously scheduled to announce details regarding the resumption of sales of One Day Regional Rail Passes for the Papal Visit has been postponed. The announcement will be rescheduled for later this week.â€ The online sale of the passes was suspended last week when the website crashed due to the volume of traffic. SEPTA officials tested the system prior to launch but the demand was three times their projections. They plan to sell 175,000 round-trip Regional Rail passes for each day of the Pope's visit, Saturday and Sunday September 26th and 27th.
