PA Budget Talks Continue, Hunting Park ATM Explosion, Nutter Papal Fence Frustration

Democratic Governor Tom Wolf and Republican legislative leaders say talks Tuesday on Pennsylvania's three week-old budget stalemate were productive, but there were no breakthroughs reported. Perhaps the best sign is that Tuesday’s negotiating session between the governor and GOP legislative leaders, which lasted more than three hours, was by far the longest since Wolf vetoed a Republican-passed budget on the night of June 30th. But House Majority Leader Dave Reed admitted that the meeting was almost entirely devoted to discussion of spending, not to talk about the wide gulf on the issue of taxes. But Reed says the differences are narrowing.

Authorities say an ATM exploded in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park neighborhood. Philadelphia Police were investigating on 6th and Luzerne Streets after receiving multiple calls about a shooting just after 9:20pm Tuesday when they saw an ATM they say had “obviously been vandalized.” Chief Inspector Scott Small says the machine had been torn apart, and pieces of the ATM were scattered around the street; some of the pieces flew 50 to 100 feet. A Philadelphia Police bomb squad arrived to investigate, determining that the damage to the ATM was due to some sort of explosive device.

Mayor Michael Nutter is voicing frustration over facing repeated questions about fences that will be put up in Center City for the Pope’s visit. At a news conference Mayor Nutter repeated what he said before — there will not be a fence around Center City for the Pope’s appearance but there will be some fences. And fences for the Pope, Nutter pointed out, are not unusual. He also voiced support for SEPTA after its website could not handle demand for train tickets on the weekend of the Papal visit. And Nutter said the SEPTA website crash is not an indication of more problems to come.
