President Barack Obama will be in Philadelphia today to offer remarks at the 106th NAACP convention. NAACP President Cornell Brooks says he expects President Obama to provide guidance on key civil rights issues facing communities of color, like racial profiling, mass incarceration, voting rights and hate crimes. The 106th convention has included speeches by the nation’s top legal minds, including Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby and Barbara Arnwine of the lawyers committee for civil rights.

Mayor Nutter leaves for a week-long trip to Germany and Israel today. The first stop for Mayor Nutter is the city of Frankfurt, Germany, which is establishing a Sister City relationship with Philadelphia. Then on Friday he’ll go to Tel Aviv, according to Luke Butler of the Commerce Department. “He’ll work with Israeli companies that have already committed to opening an office in Philadelphia, to recruit even more Israeli companies to come to the city,” Butler says.

Stores like the Barnes and Noble in Center City are opening up earlier, 7 am, for folks to get a copy of Harper Lee’s ‘Go Set a Watchman’, the sequel to “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Much has been said and written about the book. Harper Lee, 89, has reportedly been dealing with health issues since a stroke in 2007. Her attorney and friend says she found the manuscript. Revealed in the book is Atticus Finch’s altered views when it comes to race, which has disappointed readers and the sequel’s protagonist Jean Louise, better known as Scout.

Weather
Clouds and sun…scattered thunderstorms. High 88 in Center City.
