Storm Damage Outages, Cosby Mural Removal, Papal Visit Secret Service Hits High Rises

Severe storms moved through the area Thursday night, causing damage and leaving thousands without power. As of 10:30 p.m., PECO reports about 7,129 outages, with most of them in Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. PSE&G reports about 3,829 outages, Delmarva about 4,896, AC Electric about 1,176 and Met-Ed about 912. SEPTA trains were bypassing Erie Station along SEPTA’s Broad Street Line due to storm water entering into the station. Delays were also reported at Philadelphia International Airport. In Tilden Township, Berks County, the Blue Mountain SDA elementary school was reportedly destroyed around 6 p.m., according to Blue Mountain Academy High School’s Facebook page. Damage is also being reported in parts of Delaware where in New Castle a building was reportedly torn apart in an industrial area.

In light of the recently revealed court documents regarding Bill Cosby, the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program has decided to remove a mural that includes him. The mural has been part of North Philadelphia for the past 15 years and includes other African American leaders including Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. But the mural has been deteriorating and spokesperson with the Mural Arts Program, Cari Feiler Bender says it was already on the list to be removed. No exact removal date has been set. If there is funding and community interest, then the mural may be redone in another location without the image of Bill Cosby.

When the Pope calls the Ben Franklin Parkway home the last weekend of September, you’d think some of the best seats in the house would be in the high-rises in the Art Museum area. But the Secret Service might have other ideas. Staff at several neighboring buildings say agents have scoped out their properties as well. Neither the feds nor Philadelphia police have released specific plans for September 26th and 27th, but one condo official says Museum-area residents and businesses are gearing up for a virtual lockdown. One condo manager says he’s been told no deliveries will be allowed and cars will have to be moved off streets in the area starting Friday September 25th.
