Arrest Made After 69th Street Fire; Teen Set Boy on Fire w/ Hand Sanitizer; SC Gov. Signs Flag Bill

Police have arrested a homeless man in connection with a large fire that destroyed one business and damaged several others on 69th Street in Upper Darby earlier this week. 54-year-old James Morris was squatting in the abandoned second floor of the Payless Shoe Source store. Morris was inside the store at the time of the blaze. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said that Morris was trading metal shelving from the second floor to a metal scrapper in exchange for alcohol. He was charged with criminal trespassing and theft. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. It began around 5:30 p.m. Monday and went to four alarms.

A 17-year-old is under arrest after allegedly dosing an 11-year-old boy with hand sanitizer and setting him on fire. It happened yesterday near 60th Street and Hazel Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia. The 11-year-old boy was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment of 2nd degree burns to the left side of his body. Police arrested 17-year-old Rayfiq Tiggle. He is charged with Aggravated Assault, Arson, Possessing An Instrument of Crime, Simple Assault, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. Bail is set at $100,000.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley signed a bill today at 4 p.m. authorizing the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the State House. The bill passed the Senate earlier this week with 37-3 vote. It met some resistance in the House as Representatives proposed some 68 amendments to the bill. Had any of those amendments passed it would have meant delays as they were debated and considered. Eventually early on Thursday morning the bill, sans amendments, was passed by the House 94-20. The flag will be removed at 10 a.m. on Friday morning and moved to the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum a few blocks from the State House. The place where the flag pole stand will be returned to its original condition.
