PA Budget Talks, Presidential Award for Excellence, Jurassic World Tops Box Office

As Pennsylvania nears the end of its first week without a spending plan, budget talks are to resume today, but only at the staff level, not between legislative leaders and the governor himself. All signs point to a longer rather than shorter budget standoff. Late budgets in the Rendell years resulted in payless paydays for state workers and in one case, furloughs. But subsequent court rulings have changed that, eliminating one of the main factors to pressure a resolution. In 2003, under then Governor Rendell, the budget was not completed until December.

The White House has announced that a Conestoga High School chemistry teacher is one of the Pennsylvania winner of this year’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Derrick Wood is just 33 years-old, but he’s already won three major Chemistry teaching awards. The Presidential Award is his fourth honor but he says it feels completely different.
Wood graduated from Drew University. He majored in chemistry– his first love– but Drew offered him a chance to try teaching and he found his passion. The Award is given annually but alternates between K-8 teachers and high school teachers. The Pennsylvania Math teacher being honored is Susan Higley of Hughesville. The New Jersey teachers are Kathleen Carter of North Hunterdon High School and
Michael Lawrence of West Orange High School. The Delaware honorees are Kristin Carmen of Sussex Technical High School and Christopher Havrilla of Woodbridge High School. The awards ceremony is later this summer. Winners receive $10,000.

Jurassic World and Inside Out finished one-two at the box office for a third straight time on this holiday weekend. The Jurassic Park blockbuster sequel earned an estimated $31-million, while Inside Out, took in $30-million. Two new attractions, both sequels, landed the next two spots. Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL, both opening on Wednesday, finished third and fourth, with the Arnold Schwarzenegger thriller totaling $29-million and the Channing Tatum comedy earning $12-million. Rounding out the top five was yet another sequel, the holdover comedy, Ted 2, with $11-million.
