Ham Radio Weekend, Meetball App, Philadelphia Police Officer Arrested

Radio operators in Philadelphia and beyond are celebrating this Independence Day holiday weekend "hamming it up" with a special worldwide event. Bob Josuweit, president of the Holmesburg Amateur Radio Club, says ham radio operators in each of the original 13 colonies will be on the air to make contacts with other ham radio operators around the country and literally around the world to help celebrate their independence. And, Josuweit says, a special ham radio station will be activated in England to mark the connection of a native of Strabane, Ireland, who played a key role in American history. â€œThe birthplace of John Dunlap who is the printer of the Declaration of Independence,â€ said Josuweit.

Frustrated by time spent on football game days on his phone guiding friends to his specific location, a Penn State alumnus Ryan Owens realized there must be a better solution. So he created an app to do it for him. MeetBall is a real-time, location sharing, navigation app. The Doylestown-based company has just finished raising $1.5 million in funding. MeetBall as a mobile platform built by fans for fans to improve the race and game day experiences at large events like NASCAR races, football games, concerts and festivals. The Philadelphia-based Ben Franklin Technology Partners led the round of funding. The app uses your smartphoneâ€™s compass and GPS technology for outdoor events and Bluetooth-based beacon technology for indoor events, where cell service may be limited.

A Philadelphia police officer has been arrested and charged in connection with an assault on his girlfriend last month. Forty-one-year-old officer Michael Alice is charged with assault, unlawful restraint, reckless endangerment, false imprisonment and violating a protection from abuse order. Heâ€™s accused of assaulting his girlfriend in their home late last month. Police issued an arrest warrant, and Alice turned himself in Thursday. Alice is a 12-year veteran of the department. He has been suspended with intent to dismiss.
