The Philadelphia Phillies have announced the hire of veteran baseball front office executive Andy MacPhail. 62-year-old MacPhail will take over as team president in October after the season from 77-year-old Pat Gillick. In the meantime, he will act as a special assistant to Gillick for the remainder of the season. MacPhail won two World Series as general manager of the Minnesota Twins in 1987 and 1991. He has also served as president of the Cubs and Orioles. The Phillies have the worst record in baseball and are a far cry from their success last decade. John Middleton of the ownership group said that improving on-field performance is their utmost priority. MacPhail is a rare hire outside the Phillies' organization for a position like this. He wouldn't assign a time table on the rebuilding process. Phillies' manager Ryne Sandberg stepped down suddenly on Friday. The hire of MacPhail does not bode well for GM Ruben Amaro Jr., whose days may be numbered. Let's hope that MacPhail's middle name is 'Success.'

An 85-year-old woman was discovered in her home this morning in East Mount Airy and police are searching for her killer. Regina Brunner of the 300 block of Roumfort Road was found with her throat slit just before noon. Her 2007 silver four door Toyota Corolla with PA plates PD1402X was missing from her garage. She was found in a first floor bedroom. She lives with her 84-year-old friend who has been in the hospital the past few days. Police have not recovered a weapon and are looking for the suspect. If you have any information call 911.

A $5,000 reward is now being offered by the Fraternal Order of Police for information regarding the theft of 30 iPads and 4 laptops from a Catholic elementary school in West Philadelphia earlier this month. It happened on June 9th at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish Elementary School in West Philadelphia on North 43rd Street, near Fairmount Avenue. It was the last day of school before summer break. The burglar cut locks and chains to get to the equipment. If you recently bought a device from the street at a low price it may have come from this robbery. Southwest Detectives Lieutenant John Walker urges the community to turn them back in for the children to use at school. The FOP has already replaced 20 of the devices.

Tonight,
Partly Cloudy, temperatures in the mid 70's this evening in Center City.
