New Emergency Notification System, PATCO Advertising, PA Budget Deadline

Philadelphia and the four suburban counties are phasing out their current emergency notification system for residents and they're inviting you to sign up for the new system. The City of Philadelphia, along with Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester counties, are in the process of dropping 'ReadyNotifyPA' and switching to a new system for emergency notification to residents. The one downside to the change is that those who are currently signed up to ReadyNotifyPA need to re-register for the new system. Philadelphia residents can sign up at phila.gov/ready. Residents of the outlying counties should sign up for the new system at their county’s website. soc

With what could be unprecedented ridership during the Pope’s visit, PATCO is looking to balance its extra expenses with the opportunity for higher revenue. About one hundred thousand people are expected to ride the Speedline each day when the Pope is here, that’s about triple the usual ridership. Board chair Ryan Boyer says the DRPA is looking to take advantage of those extra eyes in the form of more, or more expensive, station and train advertising. Boyer says it’s too early to estimate how much more revenue could result.

Pennsylvania lawmakers return to the capitol today and may not leave until there is a new budget …whenever that is. The ostensible deadline for a new budget and lawmakers’ summer recess is June 30th, but that deadline has been missed more often than not over the last dozen years. There is a wide gulf between what the Democratic governor and Republicans who control both the House and Senate want. But in addition to differences over to the governor’s desire to increase education spending, impose a tax on natural gas extraction, and shift the tax burden to state income and sales taxes and away from property taxes, there are other issues that are priorities for GOP legislative leaders that could hold things up. Those issues include liquor privatization and reform of pensions for school employees and state workers.
