NJ Assembly Bills Passed, Bird Flu Outbreak, CBS3 Stand For Hope Telethon

The New Jersey Assembly Thursday passed a series of bills aimed at helping Atlantic City through its ongoing financial crisis in light of last year's closures of four casinos and the subsequent loss of 8,000 jobs. The package will allow the eight remaining casinos to make lump sum real estate tax payments totaling $120-million a year for the next 15 yearsâ€¦assuming revenues remain level. Other measures provide extra state financial help for the school district, mandate employee benefit levels at the casinos and divert casino investment taxes to help pay down debt. The package now goes to the senate. Governor Christie has yet to take a stand on it.

The recent bird flu outbreak in the midwest is affecting the nationâ€™s poultry industry and egg prices. In fact, one Lancaster County egg producer says so far, itâ€™s taken out about 12-percent of the U.S. flock supply. Paul Sauder â€” the third generation president of R.W. Sauder Eggs in Lititz, Pa. â€” says to date, 35 million birds have been culled, or euthanized, due to confirmed presence of the bird flu strains. Consumers will have to scramble, with retail prices up about $1 for a dozen eggs since the outbreak began, but Sauder says itâ€™s still cost effective to break a few eggs for that omelette.

It was a day of big cheers, big names, and big checks behind the scenes of A Stand for Hope, the CBS 3 telethon to raise money for Alexâ€™s Lemonade Stand. This was our ninth phone bank for Alexâ€™s Lemonade Stand. Over the years, weâ€™ve raised more than $12 million. Today, founding sponsor Volvo donated $850,000. Alexâ€™s fundraising has paid for more than 500 research grants. From the first glass of lemonade to now, Alexâ€™s Lemonade Stand has raised more than $100 million for childhood cancer. Today, they set a new record. The grand total for the Alex Scott: A Stand For Hope telethon was $2,997,865.
