Chester Police Car Bike Crash Investigation, National Donut Day, Champions Of Change

Officials promise a complete investigation of Wednesday night's death of a Chester man, run over by police as he fled from them on a bike with a gun in his hand. That probe will be handled by the Delaware County District Attorney. Jack Whelan says his detectives are keeping the family of 24-year-old Sherman Byrd in the loop as witnesses, police and sheriff's deputies are questioned. Among the questions still pending: was Byrd the robbery suspect being sought at the time?

Today is National Donut Day, and several spots are celebrating with freebies and specials. Krispy Kreme, which has locations in Bensalem and Havertown as well as in Delaware and South Jersey, is offering customers a free donut of their choice all day long at any location. Dunkin’ Donuts, which has numerous locations throughout the city and the suburbs, is also offering a free donut, but customers must purchase a drink to get the treat gratis. Jiffy Lube service centers in the Philadelphia region are celebrating the holiday with complimentary tire air pressure checks to help drivers avoid using their “donuts,” or the small spare tires. And in case you’re craving an actual donut, the company says it will also offer guests complimentary donuts throughout the day.

Philadelphia’s anti-bullying campaign called “Champions of Change” had their end-of-the-school-year celebration Thursday night for students. The campaign is designed to encourage students to take a stand against bullying and create a positive environment for their peers. This year, 25 schools in the city participated in the program. At the end of each year, teachers nominate students for who have stood up against bullies and have promoted positivity in the classroom. Each child got a trophy and a round of applause from the audience.
