Amtrak Congressional Hearing, Heartland Payment Systems Breach, Ancestral Remembrance Day

Amtrak's CEO and federal safety officials will testify today at a Congressional hearing on the deadly derailment in Philadelphia thee weeks ago. Lawmakers are expected to pepper Amtrak CEO Joe Boardman and the Federal Railroad Administration's Acting Administrator Sarah Feinberg with questions this morning. A major railroad union official is testifying as well. Their union, the BLET, after the crash, called for at least two people in the cabin. For decades, only one engineer in the locomotive has basically been standard procedure on the Northeast Corridor.

There are new problems for the New Jersey company that seven years ago suffered one of the biggest breaches of customer data. This time, itâ€™s not credit cards but instead personal information, which is considered even more valuable. Heartland Payment Systems is based in Princeton, but itâ€™s a burglary last month at their office in Southern California that has the company alerting customers. Thieves made off with 11 computers, four of which Heartland says may contain Social Security Numbers and bank account information used in payroll processing.

Itâ€™s Ancestral Remembrance day, and for the third year in a row, community members will gather along the Delaware River to pay homage to the slaves that came through the Port of Philadelphia. The Port of Philadelphia is one of the 175 middle passage ports identified as part of the TransAtlantic Slave trade. Denise Valentine, a professional storyteller and historian leads the Philadelphia Middle Passage Ceremony and Port Marker Project and is hoping to raise awareness and money to get a historical marker in Philadelphia. The ceremony kicks off outside of Independence Seaport Museum around 5:30, with the hopes the people will remember.
