Probation For 2 Politicians in Bribe Case; Dead Man Found in Suspicious Fire; Delco Nurse Ins. Fraud

Two more politicians caught in the undercover bribery sting investigation abandoned by Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane and resurrected by Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams have pled guilty today. State representative Ronald Waters (D-Phila.) pled guilty to nine counts of conflict of interest and was sentenced to 23 months of probation. He will be resigning from his office. Former state representative Harold James (D-Phila) pled guilty to one count of conflict of interest and was sentenced to 12 months probation. They will not lose their state pensions. Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown (D-Phila), a third defendant today, wants her case to go to trial. Kane had dropped the case claiming it was not prosecutable and was tainted by racial targeting of the defendants. That claim has been strongly refuted by all those involved. The defendants are all black, Democrats, and from Philadelphia.

Authorities are investigating after a man's body was found inside a Southwest Philadelphia home following a fire. It happened just after noon on the 1500 block of of South 52nd Street near Greenway in the city's Kingsessing neighborhood. Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly. The victim was found dead on the first floor. They are treating this as suspicious. The cause of the man's death is pending an autopsy. They have not released his identity. There were no other injuries.

A Delaware County nurse has been arrested and charged for allegedly committing insurance fraud on a workman's compensation claim. 36-year-old Jamie Scott of Ridley Township reported injuring her shoulder while lifting a heavy patient last August. She sought treatment over several months but kept reporting pain and that she could not work. She attempted to go back to work this winter but only managed to re-aggravate the injury. Scott received tens of thousands from her employer, Crozer-Keystone, over the time period totaling around $50,000. However, video from investigators from April captured her teaching TRX training and spinning classes at the Ridley Township YMCA that "showed Scott having full range of motion in her shoulder and arm" according to the Delaware County DA. Time cards at the YMCA shows she taught classes 84 times since her injury. Scott was arraigned and bail set at $25,000. A preliminary hearing is set for June 29th.
