NJEA Ad Campaign, Students At Museums In Philly, PA Housing Marshall Plan

With New Jersey's pension funding crisis in court and the state budget now in full debate mode, the New Jersey Education Association is turning up the heat with a new media blitz starting Thursday from Philadelphia to New York. It's costing the union $750,000 a week. Governor Chris Christieâ€™s people call it "misleading attacks and fear mongering" that doesnâ€™t get around the math that New Jersey cannot afford to fully fund the pension right now. The NJEAâ€™s ad offers its own mathematical equation. â€œOver 20 years, teachers have paid more than $10-billion into their pensions. But New Jersey politicians have paid just three,â€ the ad states. The idea is to put pressure on Christie and legislative democrats to honor the deal they made with state unions.

â€œStudents at Museums in Phillyâ€ is an organization geared toward getting teens excited about the arts around the city. They are now launching a new program to do just that. The program is free audio tours done by different students featured at 15 sites around Philadelphia. Asef Khurshan wrote and recorded an audio tour for one of the exhibits at the Barnes Foundation. Asef says he thinks this is a great way to help get teens interested in art.

State Senator Vincent Hughes is proposing what he calls a â€œMarshall Planâ€ for housing in Pennsylvania. Heâ€™s starting with a tour today of some parts of Philadelphia in desperate need of rebuilding. Strawberry Mansion and Mantua may not be war zones, but Senator Hughes says the condition of houses there requires a rebuilding effort similar to the one the U.S. launched in Europe after WWII. Hughes says heâ€™ll put money in the state budget for a program to reclaim that housing.
