| Preliminary Hearing Waived, Ofc. Wilson Murder; Amtrak 188 NTSB Updates; 15 Art Institutes Closing |

The two suspects charged in the murder of Officer Robert Wilson III in a shootout during an attempted robbery at a North Philly video game store in March have waived their right to a preliminary hearing today in court. Half-brothers 29-year-old Carlton Hipps and 25-year-old Ramone Williams each hit Wilson with shots that were potentially deadly. 30-year-old Wilson was in the Game Stop store on March 5th to purchase a game for his son's 10th birthday when the two suspects came in and announced the robbery. The prosecution was ready to present evidence including video from inside the store on the day of the incident. The attorney for Williams said that his client is remorseful and they waived the hearing because they didn't want the family to have to see the evidence and the video. A plea deal is possible. Lawyer's for Hipps stipulated to the evidence. Hipps was shot and injured in the shoot out and remains on crutches.
NTSB investigators now have the cell phone and records of the Amtrak 188 engineer. Those records show that calls were made, text messages were sent, and data was used on the day of the accident. However, they have not been able to determine if the phone was in use while the train was in motion. They have to synchronize time stamps of cell records, data recorders, videos, and radio communications and match up the activity. The NTSB also interviewed the engineer of the SEPTA train that had stopped after being hit by an object before the Amtrak train passed. He did not notice anything unusual as the Amtrak train passed. They also said the signals were working properly. Finally, although the engineer had been working on the Washington-New York segment for only a few weeks, he had been working the full Washington-Boston Northeast Corridor for three years and would have been quite familiar with the speed limit at Frankford Junction.
The Art Institute is closing 15 schools across the country. The schools are run by for profit Education Management Corporation (EDMC), based in Pittsburgh, PA. They announced today that they would not longer be accepting new enrollment at these locations. The schools would remain open for 2-3 years as the current students finish out their educations. Chris Hardman, VP of Communications for EDMC said, "As difficult as this decision to teach-out these 15 Art Institutes has been, it is clearly a step that will help us create a stronger organization that is better positioned to provide the educational value our students expect and deserve." These are the locations closing: Atlanta (Decatur), Fort Worth, Houston (North) Jacksonville, Kansas City, Michigan (Troy), New England, New York City, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Silicon Valley, Tinley Park, Washington (Dulles), Wisconsin, and York.
