| Train Service Resumes, Moment of Reflection; One Dead in NJ Crash; Last Minutes in Mayor's Race |

Amtrak and SEPTA both announced that service will resume again following last Tuesday's crash of Amtrak 188 in Port Richmond that killed 8 and injured over 200. Amtrak crews have been working around the clock to restore service to the Northeast Corridor line between Philadelphia and New York. Acela Express, Northeast Regional and other services will begin with departures at 5:53 a.m. from 30th Street Station. Repairs have been made with "utmost care and emphasis on infrastructure integrity including complete compliance with Federal Railroad Administration directives." SEPTA service on the Trenton Regional Rail line will also resume on Monday morning.
On Sunday, over a dozen city, state, and federal officials including first responders gathered near the site of crash for a moment of reflection on the tragedy. Mayor Nutter, Governor Wolf, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, and Amtrak President and CEO Joseph Boardman were all there and spoke of remembering the victims and the injured, thanking the efforts of the first responders and the community, and vowing to make sure this does not happen again.
On CBS' "Face the Nation," NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt talked about the investigation and specifically about the object that hit the train before the crash. They are still looking at speed as the biggest factor in the cause of the crash. The train accelerated from 70 to over 100 mph in the last 60 secs. Investigators are trying to figure out why and the engineer says he cannot remember. The train may have been hit by an object around that time. Sumwalt does not think it was shot at, the damage does not correspond to a bullet. He says, “I’ve seen the fracture pattern; it looks like something about the size of a grapefruit, if you will, and it did not even penetrate the entire windshield.†They are continuing their investigation into the object as another Amtrak train and a SEPTA train also were struck in the same area that night.
One person has died after fiery crash involving an overturned truck in South Jersey on Sunday Night. It happened around 8:45 p.m. in the Northbound lanes of Route 295 near the Route 73 overpass in Mount Laurel, NJ. The unidentified person died at the scene. Route 295 and Route 73 were both closed. Rt. 73 reopened around 11:00 pm. The accident is under investigation.
The primary election for the Democratic nominee for the Mayor of Philadelphia is this Tuesday, May 19th, however, historically this IS the election of the Mayor. Forget the general election in November, it is just a formality around here. This year has a crowded field of six similar candidates who mainly agree on the big issues, but do have key differences if you look closely. Today, they were all over the city doing some last minute campaigning. It'll come down to who can mobilize their voters and get them out to the polls. It might not take a lot of votes to win and there may be a surprise taking that seat in City Hall. Typically only about 25% of the registered Democrats come out to vote in the primary, say about 250,000. Some experts are saying that 60,000 votes might win the election. Philadelphia has a population of 1.553 million. If you really want something to change, Vote on Tuesday. Lynne Abraham, Nelson Diaz, Jim Kenney, Doug Oliver, T. Milton Street and Anthony Hardy Williams. |
