Trains Hit By Projectiles Prior to Crash; Report of Baby Thrown From Bridge; Death For Tsarnaev

The NTSB interviewed the engineer and two assistant conductors on Friday following Tuesday's Amtrak 188 derailment in Philadelphia. At a 5:30 press conference, National Transportation Safety Board member Robert Sumwalt relayed what those Amtrak crew members told investigators. The engineer, Brandon Bostian, said that before the wreck he did not feel fatigued or ill before the wreck and the train did not have any operational problems. However, he does not have memory of the crash itself. The last thing he remembers is blowing the horn as they passed the North Philadelphia station. The more telling interview, and one that changes the complexity of the investigation, came from the assistant conductor. She told investigators that she heard radio conversation between the Amtrak engineer and a SEPTA engineer of a nearby train both discussing being hit by projectile objects in the windshield. The SEPTA train has damage to it's windshield. The NTSB says that they have called in the FBI to examine the damage to the Amtrak's left windshield. (see photo below) How this new information factors into determining why the train accelerated from 70-100mph in the last 60 seconds of travel is yet to be determined.

Philadelphia Police are investigating the report that a couple threw a baby off a bridge in Southwest Philadelphia. A woman driving to work told police that she saw a man and a woman in her rear view mirror toss what appeared to be a baby off a train bridge at 68th Street and Kingsessing Avenue around 11 a.m. A CSX train was passing beneath at the time. Police searched the area east and west with K9's and also searched the train but have not found anything. Surveillance video from the area show a woman dressed in muslim garb and a man in a t-shirt and jeans walking away. They believe the couple is from the neighborhood and are between 17 and 20-years-old. The investigation is on going.

The jury in the Boston Marathon bombing case sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death for his role in the events that killed 4 and wounded 260 two years ago. The jury ignored the defense's claims that he was under the control of his older brother Tamerlin and instead determined that he acted more as his equal in the planning and execution of the attack. 21-year-old Dzhokhar stood with his hands folded, head bowed, and showed no emotion as the sentence was read. Several weeks ago he was convicted on all 30 counts of his indictment. 17 of those accounts carried the possibility of death. A unanimous decision was needed for the death penalty. The jury returned a death sentence on six of the 17 capital counts.
