Latest Philly Amtrak Crash Updates; Bucks Exterminator Guilty Murder; MOVE Disaster 30 Years

The NTSB confirmed this afternoon that preliminary data shows that Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188 was traveling 106 mph before it derailed in the Port Richmond neighborhood on Tuesday night around 9:30 p.m. The train veered off the tracks in an area known as Frankford Junction just as the the rails turn north near the 2000 block of Wheatsheaf Lane. Seven cars left the tracks in various states of disarray. The train was traveling from Washington, DC to New York City. There were approximately 238 passengers and 5 crew. So far there are 7 confirmed deaths, 11 critically injured, and 200 wounded. Over a dozen are still unaccounted for. The black box data recorder was recovered and is being analyzed. The incident triggered a massive response from Philadelphia emergency services including fire, police, and EMS. Mayor Nutter has addressed the media several times since the incident. At this time they are still trying to search for victims and attend to the wounded and reunite families. Families and friends should call 800-523-9101. Governor Wolf and President Obama have also pledged their support. The Amtrak Northeast Corridor service between Philly and New York has been suspended as well as SEPTA Trenton Regional Rail service. A Bucks County exterminator has been found guilty of the murder of a Children's Hospital of Philadelphia pedatrician in January 2013. 37-year-old Jason Smith from Levittown was convicted in the death of 35-year-old Dr. Melissa Ketunuti. Ketunuti was strangled to death, bound with leather equestrian straps, and her body set on fire in the basement of her Rittenhouse Square home. Smith was the last person seen on surveillance tape leaving the home on the 1700 block of Naudain Street. He gave police a detailed and lengthy confession after his arrest. On the stand this week he testified that he did not kill the doctor and that detectives squeezed the confession out of him after a long interrogation. Smith now faces a life sentence for the first-degree murder charge.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the standoff/disaster between Philadelphia Police and MOVE members at 6221 Osage Avenue in West Philadelphia. On May 13th, 1985, police attempted to clear the MOVE compound and arrest several members on warrants. This led to an armed standoff and shootout between the fortified row house and authorities. Police dropped a bomb on a bunker on the roof which set off explosions that eventually destroyed the block. 65 houses were destroyed, 11 people died, and two survived. Around 200 modern day MOVE members held a rally today at 63rd Street and Osage Avenue.
