Haverford Avenue Gunfire, Asset Forfeiture Case, Mantua Neighborhood Basketball Game with Police

Philadelphia Police are investigating after they say a shot was fired and and a young girl was injured Saturday night in West Philadelphia at 53rd Street and Haverford Avenue. An unsuspecting driver briefly stopped his car to unload something — his three, five, and seven-year-old daughters sitting in the backseat. Police believe the stop at a normally congested area may have triggered the gunfire from an inpatient driver. Right now they only have a vague description of a black car seen speeding off. The seven-year-old girl is expected to be okay.

A federal judge heard arguments Monday on an effort by the city to kill a class action designed to take down law enforcement’s process of seizing millions every year in cash, cars and houses. Asset forfeiture is designed to seize cash and property linked to drugs, but plaintiffs claim property owners not accused of crimes have had property seized illegally without due process.
The city, DA and police asked the judge to dismiss their case on several grounds, including the fact that the DA recently changed its process of seizing homes without a hearing.

Police and residents in Philadelphia’s Mantua neighborhood got together to play some basketball in an effort to help build community relations. Over 100 students and police officers packed into the James Wright Recreation Center Monday night to play basketball and talk about life. The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations helped organize the event. Before they took to the court Monday evening, police took time to talk and get to know people in the community where they serve. Many of the teens who participated say the experience helped improve their opinion of police in their neighborhood. Officials say they plan on doing more events like this all over the city.
