Four children were rescued on Sunday after Philadelphia Police say they were locked in a basement since Saturday. Police responded to a home on the 1900 block of E. Atlantic St. around 1:30 on Sunday afternoon. Authorities had to use force to enter the home through a second-floor window. When authorities gained entry they found a 13-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl, a 10-year-old girl and a nine-year-old girl locked in the basement of the home. Authorities say the children were deliberately locked in the basement around 11 p.m. Saturday night. People who know the mother say she is going through a divorce and was handling all four children by herself and working. The children had no visual injuries and were transported to St. Christopher’s Hospital for examination. Police say the mother faces four counts of endangered welfare of a child, recklessly endangered another person and related offenses. She has not been charged at this time.

UPDATE: Charnae Lee, 29, is charged with four contacts of: Unlawful Restraint, False Imprisonment, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Recklessly Endangering another Person.

When Pope Francis comes to Philadelphia for two days at the end of September his pastoral mission will have a dual purpose. Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput says the pope’s participation in the closing of the World Meeting of Families conference here is one key element of the visit September 26 and 27th. Chaput says the other is re-invigorating the Philadelphia archdiocese or local church itself – battered in recent years by financial woes, closing and consolidation of churches and schools, and the painful abuse scandal.

The action-thriller sequel, Furious 7, extended its first-place string to four weekends in a row, earning an estimated $18-million on its fourth weekend of release. That brings its cumulative total well over the $300-million mark. Second place again went to the holdover comedy sequel, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, which took in $15-million.
Two of the weekend’s debuting titles also cracked the top ten. The romantic fantasy, Age of Adaline, starring Blake Lively, earned $13-million for a third-place finish. And the science fiction drama, Ex Machina, took in over $5-million, good for sixth.
