Roosevelt Boulevard Accident Kills Driver, Philadelphia Paid Sick Leave, PA Medical Marijuana Bill

One person was killed overnight after his vehicle crashed into a tree along Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia. It happened 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in the northbound inner lanes near Ryan Avenue in the city's Mayfair section. Police say the 40-year-old driver was trapped inside and had to be cut out of the vehicle. He was rushed to Aria Torresdale Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

During a roundtable discussion at Philadelphia City Hall, a close aide to President Obama weighed in on a measure being considered by the Republican-controlled General Assembly in Harrisburg to block Philadelphiaâ€™s just-passed paid sick leave law. White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett is part of a national tour by members of the Obama Administration to call on cities with favorable paid sick leave laws. Jarrett has heard about legislation passed in the State Senate and sent to the House to overturn the local measure. She says that would be â€œdreadful.â€ Jarrett says that the Obama Administration was pushing for national legislation in Congress that would provide up to seven days of paid leave per year.

A bill to legalize medical marijuana in Pennsylvania has cleared a key Senate committee â€” and the sponsor says heâ€™s upbeat about getting a bill to the governor in the coming months. A medical marijuana bill passed the full Senate but failed to get through the House in the last two-year session of the legislature. A new bill has passed the Senate State Government Committee, chaired by Lebanon County Republican Mike Folmer, who is also the sponsor of the medical marijuana bill. As he works to address concerns of members of the House, Folmer says he believes a bill can get to the governorâ€™s desk before lawmakers begin their scheduled summer recess.
