Kensington Hit and Run Drivers Sought, Call For Quality Initiative, Rape Charge for UD Soccer Goalie

Despite having the vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident in Kensington that killed a 2-year-old boy, Philadelphia Police say the search for two people who were inside the vehicle is still ongoing. The late-model white Infiniti ‘M’ series struck a 2-year-old boy and his mother as they crossed Mascher Street near Lehigh Avenue around 7 p.m. on April 13th. While the mother suffered only minor injuries, 2-year-old David Alicea died from his injuries a few days later. Police say the owners of the vehicle brought it to authorities late last week, but say they weren’t the ones behind the wheel. Police say they are now looking for two men believed to be inside the vehicle at the time of the deadly accident, and are asking anyone with information to contact the Philadelphia Police Department’s Accident Investigation Division at 215-638-3180. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

The Philadelphia school district is inviting educators and communities to submit ideas to turn around the academics at individual schools, or to create entirely new high schools. It’s the second round of the Call for Quality initiative. Last year, Carnell, Chester Arthur and Jenks Elementary and Tilden Middle School were selected. They’re expected to open under their new systems in the fall. Even though those schools haven’t established a track record yet, deputy superintendent Paul Kihn says the district is confident enough not to wait. Kihn says the number of schools selected depends on the number of quality applications, but he expects it will be more than the four last year. The transformed district-run schools would open in the fall of 2016.

Newark Police say they have arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a college student. Paul Defeo, goal keeper for the University of Delaware Blue Hens varsity soccer team, is behind bars, after being taken into custody Sunday. The 21-year-old is charged with rape and strangulation of a student. Police say they were called to East Cleveland Avenue around 6 a.m. Saturday. According to police, the alleged victim reported that she met Defeo at a restaurant Friday night and he came back to her residence. Once inside her bedroom, she says he assaulted her. Police say Defeo is being held on $250,000 bail.
