Officials announced Monday that the reward for information in the case of the kidnapping and beating of a jewelry store employee early this month has risen to $20,000. This comes after one suspect, 31-year-old Khayree Gay, was arrested last Friday in South Carolina. Gay faces federal kidnapping and robbery charges. He waived his extradition to Philadelphia today. Three men abducted the 53-year-old woman after she left work on April 4th and bound, beat, tasered, and robbed her before dumping her in a cemetery. Police are still searching for the other two suspects. The mayor's office is offering $10,000 and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is offering an additional $10,000, for a total of $20,000. In 2014, volunteers from the Clean Ocean Action environmental group performed spring and fall sweeps of New Jersey’s 127-mile coastline. The group picked up 315,000 pieces of trash from among the sand and seashells. The most common type of trash was plastic comprising 13 percent. Plastic can cause major problems for wildlife who eat it when it breaks down into small pieces or 'microplastics'. Smoking materials consisted of 10 percent of the items collected with 30,000 butts, 6,366 cigars, and 891 lighters. Medical waste such as syringes, tampons and condoms can come from storm run-off or sewer systems. Of course, there are always the odd items including a bowling ball, whoopee cushion, parking meter, stun gun, a clay sculpture of baby Jesus, a ski pole, light-up snow man, tv remote, sleeping bag, and a swing set.
A New Jersey man caught by the “Find my iPhone†app on a cell phone he stole during a carjacking was sentenced today to more than 11 years in prison. 28-year-old Lee Carraballo of Newark was convicted last November of charges related to the November 2012 incident. Caraballo carjacked a Rutgers University student at gunpoint in the student's driveway and made off with his phone, wallet, and car. Carabello was pulled over later that day driving his own car and taken into custudy. The victim used the “Find my iPhone†feature and called the police station.
