Billie Holiday Walk of Fame Nomination, Pope Francis Visit Draws Buses, Stover State Park Rescue

Singer Billie Holiday was born 100 years ago today in West Philadelphia. She was inducted into the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame last night, and boasts a statute in Baltimore. There's now an effort to get the city of Philadelphia to honor its native daughter. Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan at Philadelphia General Hospital on April 7, 1915. Raised in Baltimore, Holiday was never musically trained but grew to become the world celebrated singer affectionately called “Lady Day.” Faye Anderson, director of All that Philly Jazz, a website that preserves Philadelphia Jazz history is nominating Holiday for a plaque on the Walk of Fame on Broad Street today. Holiday died in New York in 1959. She was 44 years old.

Regional interest in Pope Francis' planned visit to Philadelphia this fall stretches to central Pennsylvania, where church officials are organizing bus caravans to attend his mass on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, on September 27th. Joe Aponick, a spokesman for the Diocese of Harrisburg, says they are opening bus ticket sales today for members of parishes within the diocesan territory. 28 buses reserved so far can carry a total of about 1,400 people and the diocese is looking to reserve more.

The pictures show a daring and dangerous rescue on Easter Sunday after a climber on the high rocks at Ralph Stover State Park in Bucks County falls into the ravine. You see Point Pleasant Volunteer Fire Company firefighters tackling the terrain to form a human chain and a sort of zip line across the ravine hoisting the injured man strapped to a board 75 feet in the air from one side of the cliff to a waiting helicopter. The climber remains at Temple University Hospital. He sustained some broken bones and injuries to his back and legs.
