1915 Phillies Pennant Winners Honors, Philadelphia City Sales Tax Off, Furious 7 Tops Box Office

One hundred years ago, the Phillies won their first-ever National League pennant and went on to play the Red Sox in the World Series. That squad will be honored at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday. The 1915 Phillies were a star-studded group, setting a team record by winning their first four games and zoomed into first place. After winning Game One of the World Series, the Phils were swept by a Boston Red Sox team that featured a 19-year-old rookie named Babe Ruth. The Phillies and their fans had to wait another 35 years for their second pennant.

Philadelphia officials donâ€™t quite know why revenues from the city sales tax are lower than expected â€” but they suspect that Amazon and other online retailers may be to blame. At a budget hearing this past week, Mayor Michael Nutterâ€™s budget experts said revenues this year from the cityâ€™s two-pennies-on-the-dollar sales tax were below projections â€” down about 7% in fact. One theory â€” that online retailers who are charging tax to Philly customers are charging only the state tax of 6% in the city â€” not the full 8%. The first $120 million of city sales tax revenue goes to the school district, the rest to the city itself. The Administration had originally projected about $155 million to go to the city in the current fiscal year, but now have lowered that estimate to about $144 million.

Furious 7 was tops at the box office earning $143-million on its debut weekend. Behind it was Home, with a still-healthy total of $27-million.
Third place went to Get Hard, the prison comedy featuring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. It took in $13-million. And rounding out the top five were holdovers Cinderella and Insurgent, each with about $10-million.
