James Beard Awards, Mobile Food Truck Zoning, Temple University Tuition

Philadelphia's restaurant industry will be well represented at this year's James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony in Chicago. The nominees include five chefs, one restaurant mogul and a beer baron. Marc Vetri is one of just five nominated for Outstanding Chef. Steven Starr's been nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur. Alex Bois of High Street is up for Rising Star Chef of the year. Local nominees for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic include Joe Cicala, Rich Landau and Greg Vernick. Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware has been nominated for best wine, beer or spirits professional.

Mobile food truck operators, who are putting out smart concoctions in their restaurants on wheels, are giving Philadelphia City Council members some food for thought on how to accelerate the food truck scene. Operators testified in City Council Chambers about bills to regulate and expand the industry in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Mobile Food Association says current zoning and permitting regulations include outdated definitions that lump them into the larger category of â€˜street vendors.â€™ Association President George Bieber, operator of the Sunflower Truck Stop, says the measures City Council is working on would allow the new breed of mobile food trucks to expand to locations beyond the pods that congregate now around 33rd and Arch Streets, The Porch at 30th Street, Love Park, and the Navy Yard. The bills would allow them to set up on private properties, like a university, hospital or church â€“ when invited â€“ to bring their artisan cuisine to different underserved spots, even in-limbo construction sites or lots, like the beer garden pop-ups that have been a big hit.

The president of Temple University says his school should have no problem keeping tuition increases below the rate of inflation if the legislature approves the governorâ€™s request for more funding. The leaders of Pennsylvaniaâ€™s four â€œstate-relatedâ€ universities, including Temple, Penn State and Lincoln Universities, appeared before state lawmakers at budget hearings Tuesday. All indicated a willingness to hold the line on tuition if funding increases proposed by the governor are approved.
