Ukrainian Archbishop Pitches Pope, Stephen Klein Wellness Center Opens, Biobots Most Innovative

The archbishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church based in Philadelphia says he has reached out to the Vatican directly, asking Pope Francis to put his cathedral on the list of stops the pope plans to make when he comes to the city for the World Meeting of Families in September. Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka, who is based at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, says he personally wrote to Pope Francis, urging him to consider coming to pray and address the Eastern Rite faithful. Soroka says Pope John Paul II made a stop at the Ukrainian cathedral when he visited Philadelphia in 1979. The archbishop says a visit from Pope Francis would give him an opportunity to pray for Christians suffering persecution in the Ukraine and throughout the Middle East.

City officials, health care providers and homeless advocates will cut the ribbon today on a new Wellness Center in North Philadelphia. The innovative center will serve the cityâ€™s neediest population. The neighborhood around 22nd Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue is officially designated as â€œMedically Underservedâ€ and it is also overburdened with the cityâ€™s highest rates of diabetes, asthma and other illnesses. The new Stephen Klein Wellness Center aims to change all of that. So in addition to providers and a pharmacy, there will be classes, support groups andâ€“ right in the buildingâ€“ a Y to encourage physical fitness. Thereâ€™s also a hospitality area for homeless clients to shower and do laundry.

A local biotech startup created by University of Pennsylvania grads was selected to compete in the South By Southwest annual pitch competition in Austin, Texas. Biobots didnâ€™t win top honors, but they did not go home empty-handed. After losing to German startup Tinnitracks in the digital health and life sciences technologies category, BioBots was named â€œMost Innovativeâ€ at the South By Southwest Accelerator awards ceremony. Biobots makes 3-dimensional bio-printers used to produce living tissue.
