Sergeantsville Inn Fire, Nutter Library Apology, Philadelphia New Prison Budget

Crews are on the scene of a four-alarm fire that is tearing through a historic Inn in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Firefighters first responded around 2 a.m. Monday at the Sergeantsville Inn on Rosemont Ringoes Road in Delaware Township. The building has been around since the early 18th century and has been a restaurant since the early 1900s.

During Mayor Nutter’s budget address to city council this past, he apologized for trying to close libraries back in 2008, even though he had delivered the very same apology in his budget address last year. Nutter then shifted gears to praise his Library Chief, Siobhan Reardon, who recently won a national “Librarian of the Year” award. Ironically, it was Reardon’s idea back in 2008 to close 11 under-utilized branches. She argued that readers could find other branches within two miles of the shuttered ones, and the money saved would improve the remaining branches.
Nutter accepted her plan, a move he clearly now regrets, for it led to legal action by City Council, and a court ruling that the mayor could not close the libraries without City Council approval.

Mayor Nutter has begun a process that could lead to the first new prison in Philadelphia in more than a decade, whether it actually gets built, is a question that will fall to the next mayor. Mayor Nutter’s new capital budget sets aside nearly 8 million dollars to purchase land in the Northeast for the eventual construction of a new prison. Prisons Commissioner Louis Giorla says it would replace the ancient House of Corrections.
A new prison would cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and paying for that, even with state and federal help, would be a chore left to whoever becomes mayor next year.
