A Philadelphia Police officer who was buying a gift for his son as a reward for good grades was shot and killed during a shootout with two suspects who were trying to rob a video game store in North Philadelphia Thursday. The fallen officer has been identified as Officer Robert Wilson III, an eight-year veteran of the force. The incident happened at about 4:40 p.m. at the GameStop store at 22nd Street and Lehigh Avenue. According to sources, Officer Wilson, who was in full uniform, went into the store to buy his nine-year-old son a video game as a reward for good grades in school. While Officer Wilson was in line, investigators say two suspects entered the store and announced a robbery. Police say Officer Wilson engaged the suspects and they exchanged gunfire. Officer Wilson’s partner was in a police cruiser outside the store and responded upon hearing the gunshots. Officer Wilson was shot nine times, including at least once in the head. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. During the shootout, one of the suspects was shot in the leg and was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. A second suspect, who police say tried to blend in with a gathering crowd, was taken into custody.

Police say the 30-year-old Wilson leaves behind two children, a nine-year-old boy and a one-year-old, and his grandmother. Police said two weapons were recovered from the scene. The officer’s weapon was recovered as well. According to sources, a warrant was executed at a home in the 1200 block of N. Hollywood in connection with the case. Sources say an AK-47 was removed from the home. Police say one of the suspects had five prior arrests and the second suspect had at least one prior arrest. Their names have not been released.
