Riley Cooper Mr. February; Wolf Puts Moratorium on Death Penalty; Christie All Time Low in Polls

On Thursday, concerns began to swirl over the choice to feature Philadelphia Eagles' Wide Receiver Riley Cooper for the month of February on the official team calendar for 2015. February is widely publicized as Black History Month. Cooper, who is white, also had a widely publicized off-the-field incident during the off season in the summer of 2013. He was caught on video yelling a racial epitaph at a security guard during a country music concert. Cooper was fined by the team, apologized to his teammates, and even had Michael Vick vouch that he wasn't a racist. Now, he probably isn't, but in light of the incident he's also not the poster boy for Black History Month. The Eagles say they have nothing to do with making the calendar, some one else does. Eagles PR rep Brett Strohsacker said "If anything, it was an honest mistake.â€ They are looking into it.

The team issued a statement:
â€œWe do not oversee the production of the annual team calendar. We do not provide any input about the players who are featured or where those pictures appear in the calendar. The NFL licenses the production of that calendar to a third party and we do not have an opportunity to review the material.â€

Governor Tom Wolf imposed a moratorium on the death penalty in Pennsylvania on Friday. He stated that the capital punishment system is â€œriddled with flaws, making it error prone, expensive and anything but infallible.â€ The moratorium will remain in effect until the governor receives a legislative report from a commission that has been studying the topic for four years. The Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association criticized Wolf saying he didn't have authority, that it is a misuse of the reprieve. Also, the move is in effect a rejection of work done and decisions made by all the juries, judges, and legislature in the cases and for the victims. Pennsylvania's death row houses 183 men and 3 women. Only 3 executions have been performed since the U.S. Supreme Court restored the death penalty in 1976.

A new Rutgers-Eagleton poll out Friday shows New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at an all time low. For his favorability rating, he received 37% â€œpositiveâ€ and 53% â€œnegative.â€ That was over a 10 point drop in the last two months. For the job approval rating it doesn't look much better, 42% â€œfavorableâ€ and 52% â€œunfavorable.â€ So why are Christie's number slipping? (They were between 60-70% positive from September '12 to November '13) Poll respondents say that it's 1) his attitude, behavior and personality 2) Bridgegate 3) frequent out-of-state travel, lack of attention on New Jersey.

Millersville University will be providing busing for students who want to attend the funeral of their classmate who was found dead in her dorm room this past Sunday. Freshman Karle Hall was discovered early on Sunday morning in her campus dormitory after a 911 call by her boyfriend 18-year Gregorio Orrostieta. He told police they got into a fight, he pushed her, and she hit her head and became unresponsive. Autopsy results on Monday showed that Hall had been beaten more severely than that and that she was strangled to death. Orrostieta has been arrested and charged with homicide. He was not a student at the school. Fellow students will be provided transportation on Saturday morning from the university in Lancaster County to the chapel in Hall's native Kennett Square.
