Missing Boater Surrenders to NJ Authorities; Germantown Artist Convicted of Explosives/WMDs

A man missing since a boating crash last summer in Longport, NJ has turned himself in to authorities at Atlantic County Superior Court on Thursday afternoon. 45-year-old Andrew Biddle, a professional boater, went missing on July 20th, 2014 when a boat he was said to be on hit a buoy and ran into a jetty. The passenger made it to shore and Biddle presumably went missing in the water. Authorities began to question the crash and to suspect that Biddle faked his death because he was being investigated for theft and fraud during boat sales. Authorities have been on the lookout for him ever since. It is unclear where Biddle has been all this time and why he decided to surrender now. He was arraigned and granted $50,000 bail.

A 55-year-old Germantown artist, who blew off part of his drawing hand while playing with a homemade explosive, was convicted today of possessing Weapons of Mass Destruction. Last May 7th at 4 am, Douglas Ferrin was outside of his home fiddling with the device when it accidentally went off injuring the man. Police responded and he was arrested. Other such devices were found inside the house as well as a booby trapped drawer. Ferrin has a previous conviction and spent about six months in prison for blowing up the toilet in a Phoenixville bar in 2011. His lawyer, A.J. Thompson, argued that these devices were simply â€œfirecrackersâ€ and only posed a threat to the person using them. "If a weapon of mass destruction can't cause mass destruction, then what are we talking about?" Thompson said. Assistant District Attorney Lisa Nichols said that the explosives meet the legal definition. Ferrin faces 12 -18 months for this conviction, but because of the probation violation it'll be more like 2 1/12 â€“ 5 years. Sentencing will be in April.
