It was announced today that the Democratic National Convention will be held right here in Philadelphia in 2016. Philadelphia beat out Brooklyn, NY and Columbus, OH to be the Democrats' choice of host city for their convention. We are not strangers to hosting presidential conventions, having had 6 Republican and 2 Democratic get-togethers in the past, most recently the 2000 RNC that nominated George W Bush. The last DNC was in 1948 that nominated Harry Truman for his first full term after taking over for FDR. This DNC is expected to cost $85 million to put on which will need to be raised from private donations. Local Democratic leaders like Congressman Bob Brady and former Gov. Ed Rendell seem confident they'll be able to do that. The convention will be held at the Wells Fargo Center during the week of July 25th, 2016.

Past Philadelphia Conventions
Republicans:
1856 – Musical Fund Hall – John Fremont
1872 – Academy of Music – Pres. Ulysses S. Grant
1900 – Convention Hall – Pres. William McKinley
1940 – Convention Hall – Wendell Willkie
1948 – Convention Hall – Thomas Dewey
2000 – First Union Center – George W. Bush

Democrats:
1936 – Franklin Field – Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt
1948 – Convention Hall – Pres. Harry S. Truman
2016 – Wells Fargo Center – tbd

Philadelphia City Council passed a bill today that would give most city workers paid sick leave. The bill passed 14-2 and Mayor Michael Nutter is expected to sign it into law. Councilman Bill Greenlee, the bill's sponsor, was grateful to his fellow council members for sticking with him on this measure. They passed two previous similar measures that were vetoed by Nutter. Nutter said he believes that businesses were still struggling to recover from the economy, but now they can afford the measure. Companies with 10 or more employees will be required to offer 5 sick days per year or roughly 1 hour per 40 worked.

A Delaware County woman is facing felony charges after she was caught trying to smuggle drugs into a prison during a Christmas Day visit. 33-year-old Samantha Herko of Ridley Park went to visit 38-year-old John Matthews at 8pm on December 25th at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility. While being searched before her visit, officials found 8 pills wrapped in saran wrap inside her bra. Police then searched her car and discovered an empty blister pack of Tramadol, a narcotic painkiller. Herko admitted she bought them online but denied that they were for Matthews. Officials listened to prison phone calls between the two and heard Matthews telling Herko how to wrap the pills like a 'little bullet.' According to the phone calls, she did this on previous occasions. Herko is charged with furnishing controlled substance contraband to an inmate, a felony of the second degree, and possession charges in violation of the controlled substance act. She was released on $1000 bail. Matthews face contraband charges.

A 2-year-old child was struck and killed by a SEPTA trolley in West Philadelphia this afternoon. It happened around 1:00 pm at the intersection of 51st Street and Lancaster Avenue in the Parkside section. Apparently the child ran out in front of the Route 10 trolley before being hit. Witnesses said the trolley driver honked the horn but couldn't stop in time. The young boy was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he was pronounced dead. The route is being diverted while the incident is investigated.

Tonight,
Partly Cloudy and Windy, temperatures dropping into the 20's this evening, overnight 12 in Center City
