Norristown Apartment Fire, Staples Buying Office Depot, Office of Open Records Court Case

Fire fighters made dozens of rescues from windows and fire escapes while evacuating a burning apartment building in Montgomery County early Wednesday morning. The fire started shortly before 1am at the 600 block of Swede Street in Norristown. It quickly grew to four alarms. One person has died. Three people were injured in the fire, including a firefighter who suffered a cut to the hand while searching the burning building.

Staples is buying Office Depot in a cash-and-stock deal valued at nearly $6 billion. Office Depot Inc. shareholders will receive $7.25 in cash and 0.2188 of a share in Staples Inc. at closing. The deal values Office Depot at $11 per share. The companies put the transactionâ€™s value at $6.3 billion. The deal is expected to close by yearâ€™s end.

Less than a month after taking office , one of the first moves made by new Governor Tom Wolf will be argued before a Commonwealth Court judge this morning. Senate Republicans and the former director of the Office of Open Records are seeking an injunction against Democrat Wolfâ€™s decision to fire the director. Each side argues it is fighting to maintain the independence of the Office of Open Records.
