Man Charged w/ Murder of Co-Worker; Berks County Prisoner Escapes; Philly School District Hiring 400

A man has been charged in the murder of a North Philadelphia woman, shot execution style while waiting for the SEPTA bus in the morning on her the way to work. 36-year-old Randolph Sanders is accused of killing 56-year-old Kim Jones. Sources say that Sanders confessed to shooting his co-worker Jones in the back of the head at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday January 13th at 12th and Jefferson Streets near the campus of Temple University. The incident was caught on area surveillance cameras which helped lead police to the suspect by following him back to his car. The two worked together at Turning Points for Children in Center City which provides social services for families. Jones was about to turn Randolph in to DHS for mismanaging thousands of the non-profit's funds. Those accusations are still under investigation, but it is alleged that he stole around $40,000.

Police are searching for a prisoner who escaped from a Berks County correctional facility. Pennsylvania State Police say John Diven pulled a fire alarm inside building 30 at the Wernersville Community Corrections Center. He was then able to escape to a waiting red car. That was just after midnight on Sunday morning. Diven was incarcerated on a DUI charge.

The Philadelphia School District plans to hire at least 400 teachers for the 2015-16 school year. The areas of most need will be secondary math and science, special education, art, music, and upper elementary school. The district will be shortening the application process and require more information upfront such as resumes and cover letters, a sample lesson plan, references, and video of themselves teaching. The district has had budget problems in recent years and even laid off teachers last year so announcing these changes is encouraging for those seeking a job in the city in a competitive market that has charters, private schools, and suburban districts vying for the best. However, the district is already projecting an $80 million deficit next year. Entry level teachers with no experience start at $45,360.
